Someone broke into the downtown Modesto office of criminal defense attorney Frank Carson overnight and apparently rifled through his file cabinets without stealing anything, police said. Carson recently announced he is running for Stanislaus County district attorney.

“It’s troublesome. Most burglars don’t want to look through files,” Carson said Wednesday afternoon about the burglary.

In the June election, Carson will challenge incumbent Birgit Fladager, who is seeking her third term as district attorney. Carson submitted his official intent to run with the county clerk’s office on Friday.

He said the burglary occurred sometime overnight at his office in the 800 block of 15th Street. Carson was informed of the burglary about 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, and officers were investigating the break-in when he arrived.

About 5:45 a.m., a carrier delivering The Modesto Bee spotted the office’s shattered glass front door and alerted police, said Heather Graves, a Modesto police spokeswoman. The officers arrived and made sure there was nobody inside the office before they started their investigation.

Graves said nothing was reported stolen, but it appeared that the file cabinets were opened and looked through. She said the investigating officers did not have any suspect description, and it wasn’t clear how the glass door was shattered.

Carson said the file cabinets were not locked, and it didn’t appear that any of the files were missing. He wouldn’t say whether he thinks the burglary has anything to do with his candidacy, but he did say that his office has not been burglarized in the 16 years he’s been at that location.

Police ask anyone with information about this burglary to call Crime Stoppers at (209)521-4636. Tipsters can email through the Crime Stoppers website,, or text tips to CRIMES (274637) by typing “Tip704” plus a message. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and are eligible for a cash reward.
