Police are cautioning residents to take special care with delivered packages after a spate of thefts in the Modesto area.

In the past month, police said in a news release, officers have received 12 reports of mail theft. Authorities figure that most such thefts go unreported. ( Mail theft video )

Police also released a link to a video provided to them by a victim in northwest Modesto. In the video, a man riding a bicycle approaches the porch and appears to knock on the door, then casually takes off with a package. Investigators said they believe a woman in the background of the video is associated with the male and that they may be casing neighborhoods.

Police ask anyone who may have information on the persons in the video to call Crime Stoppers at (209)521-4636. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward. Tipsters can text information to Crime Stoppers by sending a message to 274637. Type “TIP704” along with the message.
