A 56-year-old man was listed in serious condition at a hospital Wednesday after being struck by a minivan Tuesday evening while walking across an east Modesto street, police said.

Patrick Lonowski of Modesto was being treated at a local hospital after suffering a broken leg and a head injury.

The incident occurred about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Merle Avenue and Woodcrest Way, just east of Oakdale Road and north of Briggsmore Avenue.

Modesto police spokeswoman Heather Graves said Lonowski was walking north from the south side of the intersection when a 2008 Honda Odyssey minivan struck him. The minivan was heading west on Merle Avenue.

She said the minivan’s driver, John Woolard, 53, of Modesto, was not injured.

The initial police investigation showed alcohol and drugs were not factors in the incident, Graves said. The investigation continued Wednesday afternoon as officers tried to determine the cause.

Officers have collected statements from some witnesses at the scene.

Modesto police investigators ask anyone who witnessed this incident or has other information that might be relevant to the investigation to call Officer Ben Kroutil at (209)572-9500, ext. 24098.
