A 4-year-old boy died Wednesday night after a pickup hit him as he rode a scooter through the parking lot at Carlsberg Park, the California Highway Patrol reported Thursday.
Stanislaus County coroner’s officials identified the boy as Daniel Tafolla of Riverbank. He was taken to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, where he died.
The incident occurred about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at the park on Eighth Street, just south of Kentucky Avenue.
The CHP said Sergio Calvo Jr., 30, of Riverbank was driving a 2006 Chevrolet 2500 HD. The pickup had been parked in reverse in one of the lot’s parking stalls.
Calvo drove out of the parking stall and was on his way out of the park, heading north in the parking lot. The CHP said the pickup’s front end struck the boy, who was riding a scooter in a northerly direction through the parking lot.
When he felt the impact, Calvo stopped the pickup and got out. He spotted the injured boy on the ground and picked him up, the CHP said, but the boy’s family stopped him and grabbed the boy from Calvo.
An ambulance took the boy to the Modesto hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The CHP said alcohol or drugs did not appear to have been a factor in the incident. Stanislaus County sheriff’s officials requested that the CHP investigate the incident.
