Merced police are looking for two men, one of which hit a third man with a metal pole while trying to rob him.

Police said a 21-year-old man was walking in the 200 block of East 21st Street around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, when two men approached him and demanded he empty his pockets.

The 21-year-old refused, police said, and one of the men began to hit the victim in the head and face with a metal pole. Though the victim was dazed, he was able to fight off his attackers enough to escape, police said.

The men chased him for some time, but eventually ran off, police said. The victim made it home and went to Mercy Medical Hospital in Merced with severe injuries to his head and face.

Police said the victim described the attackers as a Hispanic man and a white man, both in their early 20s and wearing dark clothes.

The investigation is ongoing, and police ask anyone with information on this crime to contact the Merced Police Department detectives division at (209) 385-4702 or the Tip-line at (209) 385-4725.
