REPORT CARD

Offense: A furious second-half comeback wasn't enough to erase a first half of mistakes. Colin Kaepernick was electric after halftime, but a missed touchdown opportunity – and an interception – in the first half will be the lingering memories. Grade: C+

Defense: The 49ers, who snuffed out big pass plays during the regular season, were porous in Atlanta and even worse against the Ravens, who had two 30-yard pass plays and one that went 56 yards, the longest the 49ers have given up all season. Grade: C

Special teams: Desperately needing a spark to start the second half, the 49ers' coverage unit instead gave up a Super Bowl-record 108-yard kickoff return. On the positive side, Ted Ginn's punt return helped spark a third-quarter comeback and David Akers was 3 for 3 on field goals. Grade: C

Overall: The 49ers couldn't recover from another slow start. Despite their success, they will be remembered as the first 49ers team to lose a Super Bowl. Grade: C-
