Meet The Candidate: Nancy Cline, Modesto City Schools Trustee

The following is a questionnaire sent out by The Bee to candidates for the November 2009 election. Candidates supplied the answers, and they are being published it their unedited form.

What is your full, legal name?

Nancy Carol Cline

What name do you prefer be used in print?

Nancy Cline

What office do you seek?

Modesto City Schools Trustee

What is the primary reason you are running for this office?

I am currently serving as a Board member because I value public education and I want to have a positive influence on the education of Modesto’s students. I have worked hard over the last 8 years on the Board to guide the District and set policies that insure Modesto City Schools’ students are able to receive a good education, in a safe environment, and taught by highly qualified teachers. Our District is undergoing many changes that will have a direct affect on the quality of the student’s education. I want to make sure the decisions regarding those changes are in line with our Strategic Plan and are made with a great deal of forethought, research, and wisdom.

What will be your single most important priority if you get elected?

If re-elected, my priority will be to make sure the fiscal, academic, and leadership decisions made by the District are focused on the goals of the Strategic Plan implemented in 2008 whose main emphasis is Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships. If MCS maintains this focus, then the concerns of fiscal responsibility, graduation rate, and program improvement should be more easily addressed.

What sets you apart from the other candidates?

I believe what sets me apart from the other candidates is, since I don’t work full time, I have the ability to visit the school sites during the day to observe programs, participate in special recognitions, chat with teachers/administrators, read to students as well as serving on a number of school board related committees. I have also been employed for Modesto City Schools as both a certificated employee and a classified employee before being elected to the school board eight years ago.

In addition, to fighting for age appropriate books and videos in the classroom, I took a strong stance in favor of parental rights during the recent controversy over ‘confidential medical services’, and didn’t waiver in my decision to uphold those rights.
