The following is a questionnaire sent out by The Bee to candidates for the November 2009 election. Candidates supplied the answers, and they are being published it their unedited form.
What is your full, legal name? David Frank Geer
What name do you prefer be used in print? Dave Geer
What office do you seek? Modesto City Council, District 2
What is the primary reason you are running for this office? Most of what is now the 2nd District has been poorly represented and ill served for decades. My primary reason for seeking this office is to provide representation on the Modesto City Council that will secure for the 2nd District a fair share of the city budget to correct the infrastructure and service deficiencies of the past. As a resident of this newly formed district for twenty-two years, I understand what is needed and I have the maturity and leadership skills to get the job done.
What will be your single most important priority if you get elected? The most important duty of any government is public safety. I will work with police, sheriff, and fire agencies to improve the level of protection available to residents of the 2nd District. That improvement in public safety should include the re-opening of the police sub-station on Paradise Road.
What sets you apart from the other candidate? Unlike my opponent, I do not support efforts to legalize marijuana. As a city councilman, I would oppose those who want to bring back marijuana clinics to Modesto. I have lived in District 2 for twenty-two years. Having served on Modesto’s Community Qualities Forum for four years, I interacted with various department heads in an effort to solve some of the problems facing the city.
Where do you work and what is your job title? I work at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) for the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration. I am a Federal Security Police Officer and I hold a “Q” level security clearance. I have worked at the Lab for over twenty-four years.
What date were you born and where? I was born on June 26, 1942 in Newport News, Virginia. My father was stationed at nearby Fort Monroe. When he was shipped overseas during WW2, my mother and I returned to my home state of Connecticut.
What is your spouse's name, if any? I am a widower. My late wife, Patty Iovieno Geer, passed away in September of 1999.
What are the names and ages of your children? Jason David Geer – 35. He is a computer technician at CSU Stanislaus.
Please list the schools and colleges you attended, the degrees you attained and when. Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven, Ct. – Quinnipiac University, Hamden, Ct. – Los Medanos Community College, Pittsburg, Ca. – Modesto Junior College, Modesto, Ca. – Associate’s Degree in Behavioral & Social Sciences, April 2007. I completed a political science class at CSUS in December of 2006 and may work towards a four year degree after I retire from the LLNL.
