Family members Sunday identified the woman found shot to death near a southwest Modesto park Saturday morning as Shannon Case of Ceres. Public databases list Case's age as 28.
Case was the mother of two children, said her father, Shane Case. "She loved her kids," he said. Case said he didn't know why his daughter was killed early Saturday.
Police released no new details Sunday about the circumstances surrounding Case's death.
Officers found Case's body in a parked car near Robertson Road Park on Hammond Street and Pelton Avenue after responding to a report of shots fired about 1:30 a.m., police said.
Shane Case said his daughter lived with him and his wife in Ceres.
He said he last spoke to his daughter about 4:30 p.m. Friday. She was excited to go out that night in Modesto and had just bought a new outfit, Case said.
Several hours later, Case grew concerned because his daughter seemed to be staying out later than usual.
Case called a friend of Shannon's. The friend was crying and said, "She's gone," then told him to call the police, he said.
Anita Stamper, grandmother of Shannon Case's 7-year-old daughter, said Case was a "good-hearted person who loved her kids."
Case also was the mother of an 8-year-old son, Stamper said.
Stamper said she didn't know who Case was with or what she was doing the night of her death. "She's not the type of person who would have had enemies," Stamper said. "She got along with people well."
Case's body was found less than 100 yards from where a crowd of 20 to 60 people confronted a Modesto police officer and his dog March 29. Police say one man punched the officer in the face; others threw glass bottles at the officer. The confrontation started after the officer stopped to break up a fight outside a party where gang members were present, police said.
Residents in the area say gang members often cause trouble in the neighborhood.
Police spokesman Sgt. Brian Findlen said Saturday it was too early to say if Case's death was related to the March 29 face-off between the officer and the crowd.
Investigators ask anyone with information about the shooting to call the Modesto Police Department at 572-9500 or Crime Stoppers at 521-4636. Tipsters can text information to Crime Stoppers by sending a text message to 274637. Type "TIP704" along with the message.
