Curtains Up

Tony Bennett, Patti LuPone, the Joffrey Ballet. Are those famous enough names for you?

Those are among the artists who will appear in the inaugural season of the Gallo Center for the Arts. The downtown Modesto center's 1,251-seat Mary Stuart Rogers Theater and 444-seat Foster Family Theater will be bustling with concerts, plays, dance programs and other entertainment all year round. So far, more than 100 programs have been booked between September and June.

Shows by Bennett, known for his timeless hit "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," LuPone, who originated the title role of "Evita" on Broadway, and the internationally renowned ballet company are part of the grand-opening festivities. Other headliners appearing those first few days include Johnny Cash's country-singing daughter, Rosanne Cash, and Mexican-American supergroup Los Tigres Del Norte.

While tickets to those events, plus season subscriptions for three- to -four show packages, are on sale, individual tickets for the remainder of the events won't begin until Saturday at the Modesto Art & Wine Festival. Those include former TV stars Barbara Eden ("I Dream of Jeannie") and Hal Linden ("Barney Miller") in the play "Love Letters," performances by singer/songwriter Kris Kristofferson ("Me and Bobby McGee") and composer/pianist Marvin Hamlisch ( "A Chorus Line").

Also on the lineup are musical tributes to rock favorites of the past, including the Pink Floyd Experience and "Love, Janis" about 1960s icon Janis Joplin. For families, there are kid-friendly events like "Peter Rabbit" and the Moscow Circus, and for lovers of classical music, there is a piano series and concerts featuring international orchestras.

The performers represent a variety of cultures, including Latin, Portuguese, Chinese, Celtic, Indian, Russian, African-American and African.

Tickets hover around $30 to $50 for most shows, but some, such as California Theatre Center plays, are more affordable at $15; others are much higher. The most costly event is the grand-opening gala fund-raiser Sept. 27 with Patti LuPone, with a top ticket price of $1,000.

The arts center staff worked hard to find events to suit almost every taste, so get out your calendar and a big red pen and start circling all the events you want to attend.
