Country star Trace Adkins brings his big hat and booming sounds to Turlock Community Theatre. The Grammy-nominated artist of “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” and “You’re Gonna Miss This” fame also has made it big outside the music arena. In 2013, he won “The Celebrity Apprentice” and helped raise more than $1.5 million for the American Red Cross. He also has appeared in movies including “The Lincoln Lawyer” and “Moms’ Night Out.”
Christian music trio Selah brings its music and message to the Gallo Center for the Arts. The group has been performing since 1997 and won multiple Gospel Music Association Dove Awards. Its current lineup consists of original members Todd Smith and Allan Hall and new singer Amy Perry, who joined in 2006. The contemporary Christian group took its name from the term “selah,” which occurs multiple times in the Psalms and biblical scholars think is a musical term that signals a pause or reflection.
Norman Foote and the Great Valley Academy Choir join forces for a special show. Foote is an award-winning entertainer from Canada known for his combination of music, puppetry and comedy. He has won four Juno Awards in his native Canada for best children’s album in 1990, 1993, 2001 and 2010. Students from the Modesto charter school choir will perform with him in the show.
Sunday Afternoons at CBS
Two opera singers open the 23rd season of the Sunday Afternoons at CBS concert series at Congregation Beth Shalom. Mezzo-soprano Kindra Sharich from San Francisco and soprano Christine Capsuto from San Jose will perform at the event. Both women have been featured in Modesto’s Townsend Opera productions – Sharich in the title role in the 2013 production of “Cinderella” and Capsuto as Musseta in “La Bohème” earlier this year. The show will feature “An Afternoon of Arias and Duets,” with music from opera, Broadway, the American Song Book and around the world. The season opener will be followed by a dinner at the home of Modesto Mayor Garrad Marsh.
A Midsummer’s Night Jazz
Spend A Midsummer’s Night Jazz with some acclaimed smooth-jazz musicians. The show will feature saxophonist Greg Vail, singer and guitarist Slim Man and percussionist Mombo. Also performing will be local drummer Dave Hawkes and keyboardist Tateng Katindig.
Jazz in the Park
The Modesto Modesto Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department will present Jazz in the Park on Saturday. The free family event will feature performances from the Dream Chasers Drill Team, Aztec Folklorico Iscali Dance Group, Groupo Folklico Dancers and Ballet Folklorico Xochippili dance groups. Also featured will be Darnell Robinson’s Nellrock Jazz Band. The afternoon will include children’s activities, bounce houses and information booths. Free refreshments also will be provided.
