“South Pacific”

Modesto Performing Arts brings audiences to the “South Pacific” with a production of the Tony Award-winning musical. Set in the Pacific islands during World War II, the show features musical theater classics including “Some Enchanted Evening” and “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair.” The cast includes veteran Townsend Opera performer Joe Rykert and his son Joseph Rykert, Modesto performer and teacher Randi Lineé, Stockton actress Elsa Fulton and Modesto native Mark Siciliani as Luther Billis, a character he first took on with the company 40 years ago.

Modstock

For those about to rock, Modstock salutes you. The fourth annual Modstock Musical Festival jams its way into the Mancini Bowl at Graceada Park this weekend. The free community event is sponsored by the Valley Music Institute and Roberts Auto Sales. The all-day outdoor festival will feature 26 local bands, food, drinks, arts and crafts, demonstrations and bounce houses. The Valley Music Institute brings local music students together to form bands and play shows.

Modesto Fiji Festival

The Modesto Fiji Festival returns with a full day of Polynesian culture, food and entertainment. The event will feature food and retail vendors for festivalgoers to browse. There also will be live entertainment, kids’ activities and a soccer tournament.

Roy Orbison Returns

The Roy Orbison Returns tribute show brings the sound of the late Rock and Roll Hall of Famer back to the stage. The show features Wiley Ray and The Big O Band performing the famed singer-songwriter’s most popular hits, including “Only the Lonely,” “Crying Over You,” “Blue Bayou” and “Pretty Woman.” The tribute act has been touring for the past decade and takes its name from Orbison’s nickname.

Mic Gillette Band

Check out original Tower of Power band member Mic Gillette and his band in Newman this weekend. The Mic Gillette Band also features his daughter, Megan Gillette McCarthy, and fellow bandmates Greg Barker, Gerry Jonutz, Ryan Habegger, Dave Hawkes and Clint Day. Besides playing in Tower of Power’s horn section, the world-renowned trumpet and trombone player was with the groups Cold Blood and Sons of Champlin.
