Cumbia Dance Party
The Lograr Community Institute presents a Cumbia Dance Party with performers Candelaria and La Gente. Candelaria is a six-piece, female-fronted world dance band with musicians from Mexico, Canada, Colombia, Puerto Rico and the United States. The group was featured on National Public Radio’s “Alt Latino.” The opening act of the show is La Gente, led by singer/songwriter Rafael Bustamante Sarria. The band blends reggae, cumbia, hip-hop, salsa, rock and world music. The concert is a benefit for Lograr, which is dedicated to empowering Central Valley families to win lasting improvements in health, education and economic development.
Poetry on Sunday series
The new Modesto-Stanislaus Poetry Center is presenting a series of quarterly poetry readings, Poetry on Sunday. The kickoff this weekend features 15-minute readings by retired Modesto Junior College biology instructor Lynn Hansen, as well as Ann W. Bailey, Tom Myers and Gary Thomas. All four live in the Modesto or Turlock area and were featured in the anthology “More Than Soil, More Than Sky: The Modesto Poets.”
Music in the Plaza
Downtown Modesto’s free summer music series Music in the Plaza continues today with a performance by the Tim Allen Band. The series has run every Friday since June and concludes Aug. 30 with a performance by the Highway 99 Band. The concerts are presented by Brenden Theatres, the Modesto Downtown Improvement District, Sunny 102 and 92.9 FM radio stations, Modesto View magazine and Fuzio Restaurant.
Salida Town and Country Parade and Festival
The 14th annual Salida Town and Country Parade and Festival features food, craft and information booths, kids activities and live entertainment. The parade will include school bands, clubs, farm equipment and silly clowns in small cars. The event is presented by the Salida Civic Association.
Festival Del Nopal
The first Festival Del Nopal celebrates the cactus through cuisine, dance and music. The festival will include ballet folklorico, a recipe contest, a festival queen and cactus cooking.
Newman Fall Festival
The 43rd annual Newman Fall Festival kicks off this weekend and celebrates 125 years of the city’s history. There are only two events this week – a fall fashion show Sunday and the Little Mr. and Miss Newman and Miss Newman contests Thursday. Most of the action is on Labor Day weekend with a carnival and wine, microbrew and cheese tasting in Pioneer Park, a parade and car show.
