The Central California Art Association is hosting receptions for two photography shows Thursday at the Mistlin Gallery during downtown Modesto’s Third Thursday Art Walk. The receptions run from 5 to 9 p.m.
• “Photo Collective Members’ Showcase” celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Photo Collective. Photos on display range from landscapes to the avant-garde. Locations featured include Big Sur, Cambodia and Vietnam. Collective President Edward Mendes lists the exhibitors as Ann Bairey, Barbara Barbour, Rob Bearden, Janelle Deruosi, Lorraine Nilson, Alan Richards, Amilia Schmidt, Bambi Schmidt, David Silva, Tony Scoble, Virginia White, Donna and Danial Diaz and Mark Wilburn.
• “Havana Focus” features 30 photographs taken by David Schroeder and Jon Sousa during their trip to Havana, Cuba, in May 2012. Sousa’s pieces are 4-by-6-foot free-standing mosaic-style photographs and Schroeder’s are large wall pieces.

Turlock youths set to present ‘Legally Blonde’
Turlock Youth Performing Arts presents “Legally Blonde” today through Sunday at Turlock Community Theatre. The musical is about a pretty, popular sorority girl who decides to earn a law degree to win back her ex-boyfriend. Gallo Center for the Arts seeking volunteers
The Gallo Center for the Arts in Modesto is seeking volunteers to work as ushers, serve refreshments and do other tasks. Volunteers are required to attend a one-hour orientation session and commit to working a minimum of three performances a month. The next orientation sessions are scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 13, Sept. 24, Jan. 28 and April 29. Springsteen tribute at West Side Theatre
The Rising, an eight-piece Bruce Springsteen tribute act from Los Angeles, performs Aug. 17 at the West Side Theatre in Newman. The show begins at 8 p.m. The band performs songs from throughout Springsteen’s career, beginning with 1973’s “Greetings From Asbury Park” through the Boss’ 2012 release, “Wrecking Ball.” The West Side Theatre is at 1331 Main St. Tickets are $19 general and $22 reserved, with children and students half price. Davila appointed Townsend Opera chorus master
Liisa Dávila, who recently played Violeta in Townsend Opera’s “La Traviata,” has been named the company’s chorus master. A native of Sacramento, Dávila lives in Modesto and has performed many roles with Townsend Opera. She will prepare the chorus for main stage operas at the Gallo Center for the Arts. “Our community singers will have the opportunity to grow from her knowledge and expertise while preparing for our operas,” said Townsend Opera General and Artistic Director Matthew Buckman.
