PLAYERS: Shane Hobaugh, lead vocals/guitar/keyboard; Izzy Ottovich, guitar/backing vocals and Gabe Everett, drums
SOUNDS LIKE: The Modesto metal-alternative rock outfit has been compared to bands Stone Sour, Burn Season and Red. Its influences include the Deftones, Breaking Benjamin and August Burns Red. The group's cross-genre influences have led to its hard-edge riffs and affable melodies.
BACKSTORY: Founded in 2006, the original members were bassist Bobby Butler, drummer Roger Jones and guitarist Hobaugh. While auditioning for a lead vocalist, Ottovich was discovered and clicked in the lead guitarist position with Hobaugh switching to singer. The group has played locally and statewide to promote its EP, "Drowning the Sun." It has performed at the famed Whisky in Hollywood and opened for Static-X at the Fat Cat Music House & Lounge. In the Absence was nominated for a 2007 Modesto Area Music Association Award for Best Hard Rock band. Last year, the lineup shuffled as Everett took over the drum kit. The band still is auditioning for a permanent bass player.
QUOTE ME: "True original music comes from an open mind and the ability to welcome unconventional elements to a formulated style." — Shane Hobaugh, lead singer

NEXT GIG: Show 7 p.m. today at Modesto's Fat Cat Music House & Lounge. Also performing will be BlindFire and Judgment Day. Tickets are $10.
