Measure T isn't about increased taxes. In fact, it isn't really about taxes at all. Measure T is about literacy, jobs, access to research materials and creating a future for our community that is prepared for growth, industry and success.
Term limits should be repealed. If voters like the way an Assembly member or state senator is doing the job, they should be able to keep him or her in office. And if they don't like a legislator's performance, voters have shown every willingness to boot him or her. Term limits haven't helped the Legislature become more effective; we would like to see them eliminated but we don't think that will happen anytime soon. Until then, the electorate could help the situation by approving an incremental change contained in Proposition 28.
Cigarette smoking is a disgusting and unhealthy habit. There are no good reasons to start smoking and many good reasons to quit. Likewise, we don't have much use for the big tobacco companies that spend millions to entice young people to smoke, starting them on what well may become a lifetime addiction. All that said, we don't support Proposition 29, which would raise the tax on cigarettes sold in California by $1 a pack.
