An 18-year-old man was injured Wednesday morning after a dispute with another teenage male over a common girlfriend ended with gunfire near Elliot Alternative Education Center in central Modesto, a police spokesman said.
The victim suffered a gunshot wound in the stomach, and he was taken by friends to a Modesto hospital, said Modesto police Detective Darren Ruskamp. The victim's injuries were not life-threatening.
Police did not release the victim's name, to ensure his safety. On Wednesday night, investigators were looking for a suspect identified as the shooter.
Detectives, however, declined to release the suspect's name or age, fearing it would jeopardize the investigation. Ruskamp said detectives were still looking for witnesses to interview.
The shooting occurred about 9:30 a.m. in the 500 block of East Coolidge Avenue, west of Sunrise Avenue and north of East Orangeburg Avenue.
Ruskamp said the victim and the suspect had argued over the girlfriend earlier in the day.
The suspect left but returned with a gun and shot the victim, he said. The suspect then left the scene.
David Salcido, who lives on a nearby cul-de-sac, said he was outside with friends to fix his fence when they heard an altercation.
He and other residents said they didn't see the shooter or the victim.
"We heard yelling and then a shot, and then a car pulled away," Salcido said.
