A man was shot to death in a west Modesto apartment Saturday morning, police reported.

The man, whose name was not released, was found dead in the 900 block of Sutter Avenue after police responded to a report of gunshots shortly after 9 a.m., officer Scott Nelson said.

No arrests were reported as of Saturday evening.

The victim was a young Latino adult, Nelson said, but his age and place of residence were not available.

"At this time, it doesn't appear to be gang- related and doesn't appear to be a drive-by shooting," he said.

Police blocked off the street for five hours as they collected evidence, with the victim's body still lying just inside the front door.

Several neighbors said they did not hear the gunshots or know much about the victim.

Timeka Leggett, who lives directly across Sutter from the shooting scene, said it usually is a safe street.

"We don't have a problem here compared to when we lived on G Street," said Leggett, a 25-year resident of west Modesto.

People with information about the shooting can call Crime Stoppers at 521-4636. Tipsters also can e-mail tips through the Crime Stoppers Web site, www.modestopolice.com/CrimeStoppers, or text tips to CRIMES (274637) by typing "Tip704" plus the message. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and are eligible for a cash reward.
