A Modesto man was arrested Thursday morning after he led California Highway Patrol officers on a 12-mile chase that started north of Denair and ended near Carpenter Road south of Modesto, officials said.
CHP officer Richard Kennell said they had chased Kevin Grissom, 24, for about 20 minutes when he pulled over, got out of his vehicle and surrendered.
The chase started about 10:15 a.m. near Berkeley Road and Santa Fe Avenue, just north of Denair. Kennell said he spotted Grissom driving a white Jeep Cherokee in the opposite direction at about 80 mph in a 55 mph zone.
Kennell made a U-turn and tried to pull Grissom over, but the Jeep fled at high speeds. The Jeep made it to Keyes Road and headed west. Kennell said three CHP patrol cars and a CHP airplane followed the Jeep.
He said Grissom tried to lose the officers by driving over railroad tracks, where vehicles are not supposed to cross. The tracks damaged three wheels on the Jeep, but Grissom continued to flee, Kennell said.
The Jeep made its way to Grayson Road, Kennell said, and started heading east when Grissom gave up, just east of South Carpenter Road. Kennell said officers searched the Jeep and found a loaded pistol.
He said Grissom was on probation for a conviction for weapons possession. Grissom was arrested on suspicion of driving with a suspended license, evading police and being a felon in possession of a firearm, a loaded firearm and a concealed firearm, officials said.
