A Salvation Army bell ringer collecting donations in front of a Save Mart grocery store in Turlock thwarted a robbery Wednesday evening when he fought off a man trying to steal his pot of money, police said. The robbery attempt occurred about 5:45 p.m. as the bell ringer stood outside the grocery store on Geer Road, said Turlock police Sgt. Steven Williams.
The bell ringer and the would-be robber struggled, and Williams said the bell ringer tore the robber's shirt before the robber ran off. Police described the robber as a Latino, about 20 to 30 years old, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing about 200 pounds. Witnesses said the would-be robber was bald on the top of his head or had a crew cut with long hair in back.
