Gluttony could really work out for someone this weekend.

The new Too Tall Donuts & Cafe, 2601 Oakdale Road, Modesto, will celebrate its grand opening Saturday with a doughnut eating contest.

The doughnut shop opened in March but is inviting the public to its free festivities, including the eating contest, face painting, balloon animals and other children's activities, from 10 a.m. to noon.

The shop hopes to make the contest an annual event. Entrants will vie for the top prize of $100 plus 365 free doughnuts (one for each day of the year) and assorted other prizes. Entry is $5. The stomachache afterward apparently is free.

The contest will start at 11 a.m. As many as 50 doughnut lovers will compete to see who can eat a dozen doughnuts the fastest. The time limit is 3½ minutes.

Owner Uen Freeman, whose mother owns the original Too Tall Donuts a few blocks south on Oakdale Road, said the new cafe expands the other shop's offerings to include coffee drinks, bagels, scones, muffins and smoothies.

The shop is in the process of getting a beer and wine license. It has indoor and outdoor seating with several flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi.

"We wanted to do something that will be an annual event and something that separates us from the other doughnut shops," Freeman said.

Too Tall Donuts & Cafe is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. seven days a week and will expand its Friday to Monday hours once its liquor license is approved.

Elsewhere around the Business Beat:

Everything old is new again at the consignment boutique Threads. The store at 3507 Tully Road, Suite 320 (next door to Mr. T's Donuts), will open its doors at 10 a.m. Saturday for its grand opening.

Owner Michelle Hatter has been a longtime consignment shopper. "It seemed like a great opportunity to do something I love and make connections in the community," she said.

The store will sell women's and teens' casual and formal clothing, shoes, jewelry and accessories. Sellers will split the profits from sales with Hatter. Consignment items are accepted daily until 3 p.m.

Store hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. There will be refreshments at the Saturday grand opening.

And finally, join the final day of Modesto's Acts of Kindness Boutique and Gallery this Saturday.

The spiritual and new age gift shop, 619 14th St., has been having a going-out-of-business sale to get rid of all merchandise after a theft last winter that forced the owners to close it.

Owners Sofie Pettygrove and Ramona Harris will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the shop's final day. For more information www.actofkindness.info or e-mail actofkindness@sbcglobal.net.
