Modesto warns of bill-collecting scam

The city of Modesto is warning residents that at least one person is impersonating a city worker and trying to collect cash by telling residents they are past due on their utility bill.

The city said in a news release that it does not send employees to homes to collect on delinquent accounts.

Residents are asked to call the Police Department's property crimes unit at 572-9580 if someone claims to be a city worker collecting on an account.
