THE SCAM: Fake rental home ads online
HOW IT WORKS: Craigslist, a free Web site that doesn't verify the ads it posts online, lets anyone anonymously post "houses for rent" ads. Some of the homes listed for rent are fakes. Those posting the ads include real photos of the homes' exterior and real addresses, but they don't own the homes and aren't authorized to rent them out. They list only an e-mail address. When prospective tenants contact them, they make up stories about being out of town and unable to show the home personally. Instead, they suggest the renter send a copy of her credit report with a check for the first month's rent.
WHAT'S AT STAKE: Your money and personal financial information that identity thieves can use.
HOW TO BEAT IT: When screening homes for rent, look for ads that list a local phone number or the name of a local business. Always meet the landlord in person and verify he is who he claims to be before handing over any money. Always inspect the home before you give a landlord any money.
