THE SCAM: Lovelorn on the Internet
HOW IT WORKS: Dating sites are among the more high-profile Web sites out there, and many people have found romance on them. But not everyone trolling such sites is looking for love; some are looking for victims. Users of online dating sites are reporting a scam in which men and women can be victims. The con artist contacts the victim through the dating site, sending flattering pictures to the victim. After a few e-mails, the potential date then says he or she is in a foreign country and won't be back in the United States for some time. Eventually, the con artist asks for financial help, but any money sent is only going to bring the victim a lonely heart and an empty wallet.
WHAT'S AT STAKE: Your money and personal information that could be used for other fraudulent schemes.
HOW TO BEAT IT: Be wary of a dating contact who claims to be from another country. If you're asked for money, end the relationship.
