If it’s been a year or more since you’ve had your chimney inspected and cleaned, you might want to get that done.
That was the message from the Modesto Fire Department this morning after they tended to a chimney fire in the 700 block of Park Hurst Way in south Modesto.
Firefighters were called to the home after a report that a chimney was on fire.
The family renting the home reported the fire, and they were safely out of the house before firefighters arrived. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, and damage was confined to the chimney. The two adults and child were able to return to the home.
Battalion chief Sean Slamon said there likely was a heavy build-up of creosote, a flammable residue from burning wood that sticks to the walls of the chimney flue. If emough builds up, it can catch fire.
In the case this morning, the creosote caught fire and burned so hot, it burned beyond the flue and caught the wood siding on fire.
“This is the time of year to get your chimney inspected and cleaned,” Slamon said.
Four engines, a truck and a battalion chief tended to the blaze.
