ESCALON — Firefighters were busy over the weekend battling fires that caused significant damage to two homes.

The first fire was reported at 8:38 p.m. Saturday at a home in the 22000 block of Burwood Road. Escalon fire Battalion Chief Joe Pelot said firefighters salvaged some of the home's contents but he believes the home will be a total loss. He said the fire's cause is under investigation. He said the residents were not at home.

The second fire was reported at 1:20 a.m. today in the 1100 block of Stanislaus Street. The residents got out of the home safely before firefighters arrived. He said firefighters knocked down the fire within 15 to 20 minutes. He said the home appears to be salvageable.

The Red Cross was called to help the family with temporary lodging and other assistance. He said it appears the fire started on a side fence and then climbed up the side of the house, though the fire remains under investigation.

Pelot said firefighters from Modesto, Salida, Stanislaus Consolidated, Ripon and Oakdale Rural helped Escalon firefighters fight the blazes. There were no injuries. Estimates on how much damage the fires caused were not available.
