Merced County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Hilmar man they say threw a cat into a canal over the weekend.
Randy Case, 23, is being held on suspicion of cruelty to an animal. Witnesses reported a man threw an animal into Lateral No. 7 on Geer Road near Hilmar on Saturday.
Deputy Micah Brawley went to the scene and found a wet cat hiding in shrubs at a house near the canal. Based on a vehicle description, Brawley went to Case’s home, where the suspect joked about throwing the cat into the water. Casey was arrested and remains in jail on $5,000 bail.
The cat was taken by animal control to be treated for any injuries.
