The state Department of Motor Vehicles office in Sonora was shut down and evacuated Monday afternoon after an unattended briefcase was discovered in the lobby of the building.
The Calaveras County Sheriff Department's Bomb Squad was called to the scene, and it was determined the briefcase contained no explosive devices.
The office staff at the DMV at 885 Morning Star Drive said they believe the briefcase was left in the lobby around 12:30 p.m., and about 30 minutes later, called police when none of the customers in the building claimed it. The bomb squad was called shortly after.
The Sonora Police Department is trying to locate its owner.
