Smoke from the Telegraph fire is expected to worsen air pollution readings in foothill and mountain communities.
The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District warned residents today to monitor air quality closely, and to assume that pollution levels are high if they can see or smell smoke.
At Yosemite National Park, a short distance east of the fire, rangers issued similar warnings to guests.
"We're requesting visitors not to engage in any strenuous activity if they have lung problems," said park spokeswoman Kari Cobb.
Air quality forecasts are available by 4:30 p.m. daily by calling (800) 766-4463.
