In printing the newspaper

  • We start with recycled paper – the newsprint we use is 50% recycled content.
  • Trees grown for newsprint production are farmed much like any other crop. They are re-planted and re-grown to provide a continuous supply.
  • We're using a new type of paper that is lighter in weight and slightly narrower – paper-saving changes that you as a reader probably won't notice.
  • The Bee's Flexographic press uses less paper at start-up. Flexo also uses water-based inks, which are completely safe for the environment.
  • Papers returned from newsstands, excess ad inserts, start-up waster, even the cardboard cores the newsprint comes on – all are baled for recycling.
  • The number of newspapers we print is adjusted daily to avoid wasted papers.

In transporting the paper

  • The Bee uses battery and propane-powered equipment to move the heavy rolls of newsprint to the press.
  • Newspapers are delivered to strategically located distribution centers to reduce mileage on our largest trucks.
  • The Bee's fleet of vehicles is regularly maintained to run cleanly and efficiently.
  • Bee messengers have the use of several hybrid vehicles.

In our business operations

  • Each desk has access to recycling containers, and employees are encouraged to recycle office paper.
  • Most advertising customers receive electronic checking copies of their ads, saving paper and gasoline.
  • Paperless reports, electronic time cards, and online access to employee benefits information helps reduce paper use.
  • The Bee's windows are tinted and heating and cooling systems are electronically controlled to save power. The building is partially cooled with natural air flow.
  • The Bee's press operates at non-peak hours, reducing stress on the power supply.
  • News racks are recycled and rebuilt.
  • Landscaping around The Bee requires less frequent watering.
