Event features Good Egg, speedy eggs

During part of a Thursday morning gathering, egg industry leaders saw how fast an omelet can be made.

During another, they saw how years of devotion by agricultural educator Mark Bender has benefited students around the state.

Both happened at the 47th annual Good Egg Breakfast, which drew several hundred people to the DoubleTree Hotel in Modesto.

Howard Helmer of New York City, who bills himself as "the world's fastest omelet maker," showed how to turn one out in 40 to 60 seconds.

The attendees then lined up to make their own omelets with the help of volunteer chefs from the industry.

Bender, chairman of agricultural studies at California State University, Stanislaus, received the annual Good Egg Award. It is given to leaders or supporters of the egg industry.

Presenter John Scheuber cited Bender's work at the Turlock campus and previously as ag dean and instructor at Modesto Junior College.

Bender also has been involved in fair competitions and has helped to improve the connection between high school and college ag programs in California.

"He has done all this for the benefit of everyone in agriculture and beyond," Scheuber said.

The breakfast raised scholarship money for MJC ag students. It was sponsored by the Pacific Egg & Poultry Association, the California Poultry Federation, the Modesto Chamber of Commerce and the Stanislaus County Farm Bureau.
