Organic farming experts to speak

Experts in organic farming will offer advice at a July 23 seminar near Modesto. The event will feature information for fruit, nut and other growers on managing pests and fertilizing the soil without synthetic chemicals. It will run from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Harvest Hall at the Stanislaus County Agricultural Center, 3800 Cornucopia Way, off Crows Landing Road.

The cost is $65 by July 7 or $75 afterward for members of the California Association of Pest Control Advisers, the Organic Fertilizer Association of California, or the Certified Crop Adviser program. Courtney Hannink of Oakdale was named Outstanding Agricultural Studies Student for 2009 at California State University, Stanislaus. The agricultural studies department, founded in 2002, had 27 graduates this year.

The American Farmland Trust is seeking the best farmers markets in the nation via an online ballot. Patrons can choose the best small, medium and large markets among the 4,685 in operation.
