Western Farm Service of Vernalis has received an Environmental Respect Award, recognizing its careful handling of farm chemicals and other practices. It was named the California winner for 2009 by the sponsors, CropLife magazine and DuPont Crop Protection.

Almond growers can get advice about irrigation, pest control and other topics at a gathering Wednesday in Merced. It will be from 8 a.m. to noon at the University of California Cooperative Extension, 2145 Wardrobe Ave. For more information, call at 385-7403.

Experts in managing peach pests will share their thoughts in an orchard near Ceres on Friday. The topics include monitoring populations, disrupting mating and releasing insects that prey on the pests. The event will be from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at Superior Fruit Ranch, 4801 E. Whitmore Ave. More information is available by calling the Stanislaus County Coopera- tive Extension at 525-6800.
