Shackelford family gets Christmas surprise from Modesto police

Modesto police Officer Benito Chavez has served as the liaison between the department and the Shackelford neighborhood in south Modesto, and has worked closely with staff at Shackelford Elementary School. But he wanted to do something special for Christmas, so he and other officers gave a single mother and her four children a holiday they’ll never forget.


Modesto synagogue thanks public-safety personnel with Christmas meal

Police officers, paramedics, EMTs and other emergency-service providers all responded to a call from Congregation Beth Shalom on Christmas Day, though there was no emergency. The Modesto synagogue put out the call – for the seventh year – inviting all first responders in Stanislaus County who work on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day to stop by for a meal.

Stanislaus State student gathers hundreds of toys for kids

An effort by California State University, Stanislaus, student Aneesa Smith to collect teddy bears and assorted stuffed animals as Christmas gifts to needy children has gathered 302 toys.
