‘Why aren’t you shooting me?’ Deputies recount tense Tuolumne standoff

The response last month to a report of a despondent, armed man in Tuolumne County included two members of the Sheriff’s Office’s newly formed Crisis Negotiation Team. Cpl. Carl Benson and his team leader, Sgt. Vic Serrano, just happened to be on patrol in the early hours of Nov. 21, and the ensuing standoff of six and a half hours became a trial by gunfire for the men.
