Oscar-winning screenwriter John Ridley talks Modesto, ‘American Crime’

The creator and executive producer of the new ABC drama series “American Crime,” John Ridley, spoke with The Modesto Bee about his new show. The series, which follows the families of the victims and the accused in the aftermath of a violent crime in the city, is one of the first to use Modesto exclusively as its backdrop. But aside from some scene-setting shots, the show was not filmed in Modesto.

Students immerse themselves in history at Patterson competition

A few hundred students competed Saturday in the History Day event in Patterson. This year’s competitors made presentations on topics including Cesar Chavez, Frederick Douglass, Amelia Earhart, Anne Frank and Joseph Stalin. The event is designed to help students learn college-level researching skills, while immersing them in impactful moments and people throughout history.

Employer announces final layoffs and timing for closing AMR office in Salida

Employees at the American Medical Response billing center in Salida will continue working on borrowed time, but their employer is firm about closing the office in mid-August, according to recent letters to Stanislaus County’s Board of Supervisors. Centrex Revenue Solutions notified the county that another 66 employees will lose their jobs when the operation comes to an end in August. They include medical records employees, billing assistants, quality assurance specialists, a mail room clerk and supervisors who were not included in previous layoff notices.
