A student at Gregori High School died after falling ill during a physical education class. Andy Vazquez, a 16-year-old sophomore, was pronounced dead at a Modesto hospital hours after he collapsed following a two-mile run on Monday afternoon.
Cinco de Mayo met with the most American of traditions – baseball – at Tuesday night’s Modesto Nuts game. Performers included Mariachi Los Carreterros and Grupo Folklorico. And Impala Classic Car Club was on hand with classic cars.
The federal government on Tuesday projected an almond crop of 1.85 billion pounds in California this year. The estimate is down 1 percent from last year and 9 percent from the record harvest of 2.03 billion pounds in 2011. The figure suggests growers are stretching what water they have to produce a food in high demand around the world.
Tom Hagan, 98, remains the vision behind the family-run Escalon Golf Course, which celebrates its 35th year of golf operation. Since the death of his wife, Betty, on Christmas Day five years ago, Tom mostly has watched while his children tend to the course’s day-to-day chores. Together, they honor the vision of the family patriarch, the former Escalon mayor and city councilman.
It seemed like they’d just been through this, saying goodbye to a friend and cowboy in Hornitos. And they had, twice in the less than three years. Cowboys who worked the same ranch were buried close by, in the same cemetery. The coffin was made by the same friends who made the last one, with a notable exception: Instead of helping build it, Gary Thompson was inside it, destined to join his two dear friends in the rocky ground at the top of the hill.
