Northeast Modesto school spruces up

Mary Ann Sanders Elementary School in northeast Modesto had a Community Beautification Day on Friday. The school had “Orchard Supply Hardware, who donated soil plants and supplies, students, teachers, and some parents ‘beautifying’ our campus with plant bed makeovers,” Principal Carrie said. Other students, she said, worked in areas to pick up trash, sweep, clean tables and otherwise improve the campus.

Abatement districts warn of early start to West Nile threat

The Turlock and East Side mosquito abatement districts started surveillance and control operations this month for mosquitoes that spread West Nile disease. Drought conditions and warmer temperatures are believed to have heightened the threat of West Nile illness in the Northern San Joaquin Valley. The potentially deadly virus has already been detected this spring in Alameda and Santa Clara counties.

A national report on longer school days says twice as many kids, still just a few and mostly in urban areas, have longer school days than two years ago.
