After police spent weeks investigating an alleged kidnapping and rape of a teenage girl, the girl confessed Tuesday that she fabricated the story to get attention from her mother. "In a follow-up interview, she totally recanted the story," said Detective Brian Shimmel. "It never happened."

Oakdale police are looking for a man suspected of robbing the Valero Corner Store at 1590 East F St., early Sunday morning

It cost the city nearly $60,000 last week to part ways with Public Works Director Joe Leach.

During a meeting packed with Public Works Department employees and their supporters, the Oakdale City Council voted 3-1 to start a process that could lead to disbanding the department, laying off nearly all its workers and outsourcing its functions to private contractors.

The California Department of Housing and Community Development has awarded Oakdale a $76,175 grant.
