The Cal State Stanislaus softball team split a pair of one-run games on the final day of the Mizuno Best of the West Invitational on Sunday. Brittani Weatherford made another solid start in the circle and went 2-for-2 in a 5-4 win over Dominican. San Francisco State later edged the Warriors 6-5.

Despite losing five times through the first 12 games of the conference season, Cal State Stanislaus remained in control entering Friday night's game against Humboldt State. But 21 offensive rebounds, a few too many turnovers and just enough missed free throws later, the Warriors saw that control slip away, falling 85-81 in double overtime.

Modesto Junior College guard Matt Ratto turned in a season-high 26 points and anchored his team's rally from a 6-point deficit in the final 2:30. The Pirates' 84-81 win over American River on Thursday bore the imprint of a hard-working sophomore who fell into a rhythm just in time for his win-hungry team.

The men's and women's swimming teams opened their seasons with victories over Los Posita College Friday afternoon at the Dave Ashleigh Aquatic Center.

The Modesto Junior College men's and women's basketball teams seek a new course as they begin the second half of the Big 8 Conference season tonight at home against American River.

Modesto Junior College begins its comprehensive spring sports season with a men's and women's swimming dual meet against Las Positas today at 3:30 at the Dave Ashleigh Aquatics Complex.

Austin Keaton connected for 34 points, including 14 of 15 from the free-throw line, but the Modesto Junior College men's basketball team was still beaten by Sierra 91-85 Tuesday night in Big 8 Conference action.

The anticipated shootout happened Saturday night between Cal State East Bay and Cal State Stanislaus.

An eight-minute scoring drought and a resurgent Merced College men's basketball team gave Columbia quite a scare on Wednesday. But the Claim Jumpers held on thanks to clutch points from its Florida transfer students in a 63-58 Central Valley Conference victory.

The game was outlined in plain view Tuesday night for the Modesto Junior College Pirates — a quality opponent, an important game, an opportunity on their home court. And then the Pirates trap-doored themselves by falling behind 18-0. Santa Rosa, sensing a quick kill, blanked MJC during the first 8:50, and much of MJC's 80-66 loss was already played out before the crowd at MJC Gym had found a seat.
