City Council

Homelessness will again come to the forefront in Turlock on Tuesday as the City Council conducts a joint meeting with the Planning Commission to discuss Senate Bill 2, which requires the city to designate an area or zoning district for a year-round homeless shelter. Turlock operated a shelter on B Street until last year. Nonprofit and faith-based groups stepped in to fill the gap. SB2 doesn't require the city to build a shelter, but it must create an area for one and policies to make it easier to build. At its regular meeting afterward, the council will consider establishing fees for weed abatement and abandoned car disposal, and a proposal to rebuild Canal Drive. The first meeting is at 5 p.m. and the second at 7 at City Hall, 156 S. Broadway.

The Stanislaus County civil grand jury cleared Turlock Councilwoman Mary Jackson in a report today after she was accused of a conflict of interest for voting on a controversial piano bar project. “It exonerates me,” Jackson said. “The perception was not the majority of Turlock voters. It was a few people who were politically motivated.”

TURLOCK -- The Turlock City Council will consider a plan to lay off more than 5 percent of the city work force during a budget workshop Tuesday night.
