1. Los Banos (6-5 last year): There isn’t a better offense in the district. QB Erik Martin (30 TDs passes as a junior) also has RB Darron Brown.
2. Manteca (8-2): Plenty of pop with RB Marquis Miller and WR Reggie Bell preseason all-district picks. Coach Eric Reis could win third section title.
3. Davis (5-6): Spartans were soft a year ago, but a rigorous summer schedule appears to have toughened them up. MMC is there for the taking.
4. Merced (11-2): The offense was devastated by graduation losses, so it will likely take the Bears a few weeks before they have a consistent effort.
5. Pitman (7-3): The Pride came within two plays of winning the CCC last year, but there’s no bonus for being close. The Pride could win it this year.
6. Oakdale (8-3): Defense will make or break the Mustangs, particularly since they’ve got to beat Manteca to win a third consecutive VOL crown.
7. Sierra (9-3): RB Jarron Daniels led T-wolves to their first playoff win last year, and will be one of the top rushers. The key for Sierra will be the QB.
8. Johansen (8-4): Massive rebuilding job after 99 percent of the offense (yards gained) graduated. We’ll see the Vikings passing more often this fall.
9. Buhach Colony (2-8): Coach Kevin Swartwood enters his fourth year and he’s well-stocked with talent. Thunder could be the darkhose in the CCC.
10. Sonora (7-3): RB Dan Link is a horse with the ball in his hands, but Wildcats’ are vulnerable to injuries because they lack size across their lines.
