The last time Len Johnston was coaching at Davis High, he was atop a potent program that routinely went to the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs. The Spartans were uneven in his absence, though, going 36-37-1 the last seven years. It is Johnston’s goal to return Davis to its past prominence.

1. Davis: WR Lance Castaneda and RB Xevion Vega can score from anywhere, at any time. If the QB spot is solid, no stopping the Spartans.2. Johansen: This isn’t last year’s team, but if QB Armando Hernandez matures, Vikes will be good enough to battle.
3. Modesto: Lots of skill and tough linemen. The key will be discipline — cutting down on penalties and turnovers.
4. Beyer: Lots of experience and Richie Alkire is back as the offensive coordinator.
5. Downey: It will come down to the defense, which allowed 45 or more four times in 2008.
6. Enochs: Eagles need to fill in some gaps after graduating their first class last spring.
