YOUTH FOOTBALL CAMP

Info: Offers quarterbacks and wide receivers ages 12 to 18 instruction and individual work with MJC football coaches and players. Camp registration is $125 for quarterbacks and $100 for wide receivers. Preregistered quarterbacks will receive an all-weather football, passing game manual and camp T-shirt; preregistered receivers will be given gloves and the manual and shirt. FOURTH OF JULY VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT

Info: The Modesto Jaycees needs your help. The following areas of the celebration are in need of volunteers throughout the day.

Flag Sales: Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. at the grandstand on I Street downtown and will walk the parade route from 8 to 10 a.m. selling flags for $1 each. Contact Martha Williams at mfw444@hotmail.com to volunteer.

Cortez

OBON FESTIVAL

When: Monday and Tuesday, and Thursday to Saturday

Where: Cortez Buddhist Church, Cortez and Linwood avenues

Info: It is a Japanese custom to honor the deceased members of one's family and community yearly at the Obon Festival. In Cortez, a Japanese-American farming community just east of Turlock, Obon is celebrated with folk dancing, music and taiko, Japanese-style drumming. Some choose to dress in yukata and happi, traditional Japanese summer wear, while others come in street clothes to join in the dancing. For those who like to practice the dances, there will be practices at the Cortez Buddhist Church on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, from 7 to 8 p.m. The Obon Festival will be held at Cortez Buddhist Church on Saturday, starting at 7 p.m., in the parking lot. Participation in the practices is not a requirement for participating in the dancing. The festival and the practices are open to the public. For more information, call Chris at 632-7942.
