MODESTO

LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS FOR 4TH OF JULY

Info: The Modesto Jaycees need help with the Independence Day celebration. The following areas need volunteers throughout the day.

Flag sales: Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. at the grandstand on I Street and walk the parade route until 10 a.m. selling flags for $1 each. Contact Martha Williams at mfw444@hotmail.com.

Parade marshals: Volunteers will oversee the flow of the parade and prevent gaps from occurring, 10 a.m to noon. Volunteers will be in radio contact with the parade chairman and grandstand. Contact Anthony DeMatteo at anthonydematteo@gmail.com.

Jaycee drink booths: Volunteers will sell soda and water in four drink tents at Graceada Park, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m and Enslen Park, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Contact Annel Garcia at annelgarcia38 @yahoo.com.

Beer booth: Volunteers will help keep the beer flowing and the party going, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Graceada Park. Contact Rick Leighton at ajaxdynamo@hotmail.com.

POKER RUN

When: Saturday, registration is 8-10 a.m. with the last motorcycle out by 10 a.m.

Where: Yamaha of Modesto, 500 N. Carpenter Rd., Suite Y.

Info: This is a fund-raiser for Sierra Vista Child and Family Services. With preregistration, the Poker Run costs one rider $15, passenger $10; day of event, one rider $20, passenger $15. Ride pin and barbecue lunch included. Raffle, prizes, 50/50, too. Presented by Modesto Chapter 294 STAR Touring & Riding. CAMP JACK HAZARD SLEEPOVER -- PARENTS' NIGHT OUT REGISTRATION

When: Registrations will be accepted until Wednesday.

Where: Stonehenge Climbing Gym, 500 Ninth St.

Info: This event is for children ages 6 to 14. Light supper, snacks, rock climbing, movie and light breakfast are included. The cost is $30 for a safe and fun event with overnight supervision. Space is limited. For details, call 578-9622, ext. 15.

DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR MOST FAIR ENTRIES

Info: Time is running out if you want to be part of the 2009 Merced County Fair. The deadline for most entries is Thursday. The fair, sponsored by the 35th District Agricultural Association, is July 21-26. The 2009 fair exhibitors' handbooks include all entry forms and are available online at www.MercedCountyFair.com or can be picked up at the fair office, 900 Martin Luther King Jr. Way. COLUMBIA

SUMMER BUFFETS UNDER WAY

When: Thursdays, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Where: Cellar Restaurant, lower level of the Manzanita Building, Columbia College

Info: Summer lunch buffets at Columbia College are starting this week. Students enrolled in the college's Summer Culinary Arts Institute will plan, prepare and serve specially themed menus every Thursday through Aug. 6. Meals are $8.95 per person, tax included. Gratuities are gratefully accepted. The intensive nine-week program provides training in estimating food costs per meal, menu planning, baking skills, customer service and teamwork.
