Zack Adams wasn't expected to play the decisive role in Hughson's 34-28 win over Modesto Christian, coach Reyn Franca said, but the junior quarterback was thrust into the role when MC began stacking the line to shut down Hughson tailback Aaron Stice.

"The philosophy was to control the clock and keep the ball away from (MC quarterback) Isaiah Burse by running Aaron and using a short possession-style of passing game," Franca said. "We had to modify our game plan because MC's defense was playing the run so hard, and it allowed us to throw the ball more."

With his team counting on him, Adams delivered by completing 13 of 19 for 302 yards. He threw two TDs and ran for a third to clinch a playoff berth for Hughson.

"Zack has a strong arm but knows when to put a soft touch on the ball to make it easy to catch," Franca said. "(His) efficiency has helped us by taking some of the pressure off Aaron Stice and our running game."
