Barry guides Modesto to big victory over Johansen

This was a Homecoming Andre Barry will never forget, as he scored on two long pass plays to lead Modesto High past Johansen 48-13 in the Modesto Metro Conference.

Barry caught five balls for 172 yards, including TDs of 72 and 59 yards. His 72-yarder was a short toss, on a drag pattern across the middle, and he outran the defense.

"When I came off the line, the cornerback stayed put and a linebacker picked me up," he said. "You see a big guy like that trying to guard you, you run fast."

Barry used his quickness on his other TD, as well, racing off the line and past the cornerback. The senior was 15 yards behind the defense when he caught the high-arching pass from Klayton Miller (8 of 9, 197 yards).

The Panthers (3-3, 1-0) balanced their offense with big runs from James Ingram (8 carries, 69 yards, two TDs) and Arquel Rogers (11 carries, 129 yards, TD). Ingram had a 47-yard TD, and Rogers had a 73-yard score.

Modesto's line dominated, with towering tackle Anthony Amaya leading the offense and the duo of Washington Pesaleli and Irae Hosea stopping Johansen's (2-4, 0-1) offense.

Johansen trailed 27-0 at halftime, and it got worse when Matt Avila returned a fumble 28 yards for a TD and then Rogers ran 38 yards for a score to give Modesto a 41-0 lead.

"We're ready for next week," said Barry, whose Panthers face conference favorite Davis (4-2, 1-0). "The running games makes our passing game better, because the defense has to look for James and Arquel."
