Stagg High rallied for 20 second-half points to beat Modesto 32-25 on Friday night.
"There were lots of penalties, lots of turnovers," Modesto coach Rod Long said. "We have to learn from this. We can't keep making mistakes."
Modesto fell behind 6-0 on a defensive TD, but reeled off 18 unanswered points and led 18-12 at halftime. Andre Barry brought the Panthers back into the game, catching a 9-yard scoring pass from Klayton Miller and then returning an interception 30 yards late in the first quarter for a 12-6 lead.
Modesto used its power running game to make it 18-6, using eight consecutive running plays to gain 82 yards. Junior James Ingram, with fullback Mia Feuu providing the lead blocks, had four carries for 76 yards on the drive and Miller capped it with a 1-yard sneak.
Stagg was able to punch a touchdown in late in the first half, cutting the Panthers lead to 18-12. That momentum carried into the second half.
"We're better than this game showed," Long said. "We'll get back to work and get ready for Sonora."
