Davis High's Lance Castaneda and his family have spent the last few years preparing for college, making recruiters aware of his athletic and academic performance. Here is a look at the highlights, according to Lance and his father, Leonard Castaneda:
April 2007: Lance begins a training regimen with Steven Jackson, the brother of Fresno State strength coach and former Beyer High standout E.J. Jackson. They focus on speed, agility and strength.
May-June 2008: Lance attends football camps, including the Nike Combine and the Cal camp, to get additional time in front of recruiters.
October 2008: Lance sends a biography, photos, academic transcripts to his top 25 college choices, and begins filling out online questionnaires.
November 2008: With help of coach Brad Goudeau and Dana Carney, Lance puts together a packet of highlight video and letters of recommendation from his coaches and sends it to the 25 colleges.
March-April 2009: Lance attends UnderArmour camp at Oakland Raiders' facility. He visits Stanford, Cal and Washington State at his expense during the Easter Break.
April-May 2009: Lance scores 1,490 on the SAT and 20 on the ACT, well above the NCAA minimum for both.
May 2009: Lance is invited and attends the Nike SPARQ and University of Nevada camps, and attends the Nike/ESPN Rise camp. He also visits with coaches from Washington State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Nevada, UC Davis and Sacramento State.
June 2009: Lance is invited to and attends Cal's "prospect evaluation" camp. He attends the Cal Contact Camp and is named MVP for receivers, and also contact camps players in pads at Stanford and Washington State.
