EL CONCILIO COMMUNITY CENTER — Binational Health Faire will be held Oct. 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hanshaw Middle School in Modesto. This community health fair will provide free services to the public, including medical, dental, acupuncture, diabetes screening, mammograms, mental health education, community resources, health workshops, activities, fun and prizes. Volunteers 16 and older are needed to assist with event setup/cleanup, registration, directing patients, child care, refreshments, and most especially Spanish/English interpreters to assist physicians with patient contact. Medical, dental and vision professionals are also needed to provide medical services. Shifts are available between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.
STANISLAUS SHADE TREE PARTNERSHIP — The Bob Schmal Memorial Tree Planting will take place on Oct. 3 in the Weed and Seed Neighborhood to honor his memory. Individuals and groups are needed to plant 124 trees at designated locations throughout this West Modesto neighborhood. Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. at Marshall Park in Modesto and are asked to bring shovels, gloves, and water. Volunteers of all ages are welcome, but youth under the age of 16 years will need to be accompanied by an adult. Deadline to register is Sept. 28. An additional tree planting is scheduled for Oct. 17 in the Airport Neighborhood. The Stanislaus Shade Tree Partnership is a collaboration between the Greater Modesto Tree Foundation, Modesto Irrigation District, Paradise South Weed and Seed, Stanislaus County Sheriff Department and other community organizations.
STANISLAUS COUNTY ELECTIONS OFFICE — A consolidated district election will be held Nov 3. Volunteers 18 and older are needed to serve as election officers, bilingual election officers and on-call election officers from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Election Day. Election officers help set up the voter precinct, maintain security of the ballots and voting equipment, and assist voters as necessary. A $95 stipend is offered for the volunteer's time and commitment, which includes a mandatory three- to four-hour training class offered Oct. 13-24 in Modesto, Oakdale and Turlock. Training will provide an overview of the Election Day process as well as hands-on equipment training to ensure proper set-up and operation of the voting equipment. Interested individuals must be registered voters in California and attend training. Volunteer applications are available online at www.stanvote.com.
STANISLAUS LITERACY CENTER — The "Wine, Jazz and a Movie" event will be held Oct. 1 at the State Theatre in Modesto at 6 p.m. This special screening of the classic film "Charly," starring Oscar-winning actor Cliff Robertson will provide an evening of jazz by the Kyle Barker Jazz Band and wonderful refreshments featuring Gallo Family Wine and Hilmar Cheese. All proceeds to benefit the agency's literacy program services. Tickets are available at just $25 per person at the agency or the www.readingworks.net Web site. Volunteers are needed from 8 p.m. to assist with cleanup, pack up supplies, break down tables, etc. after the reception.
CARE-OUSEL THERAPEUTIC RIDING — Volunteers, ages 13 and up, are needed to commit to a couple of hours a week to work with and assist disabled children and adult riders during therapy sessions. Volunteers walk in the arena beside the riders who are on horseback, lead horses, play games with riders, and groom horses. Prior experience with horses is not a pre-requisite and training is provided. One-hour sessions are held Wednesday and Thursday evenings between 4:30 and 8:30 p.m.
UNITED WAY OF STANISLAUS COUNTY — Volunteer receptionists, age 16 and up, are needed to answer multiple-line telephone, greet and direct the public, and assist with light clerical duties. Volunteers should have good communication, telephone, and computer skills. Flexible scheduling is available weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
VOLUNTEER CENTER OF UNITED WAY — Volunteers 16 and up are needed to provide office assistance (answer phones, computer input, filing, etc.) and contact nonprofit organizations to update volunteer and special-event opportunities. Volunteers should have good telephone and people skills, be familiar with MS Windows programs and Internet searching, and be self-motivated. Flexible scheduling is available weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
